Elizabeth Berrien created the iconic wire sculpture landmark for the airport in Louisville, KY in 1985. Hand-twisted from aluminum welding rods, it has a wingspan of 17ft yet weighs only 25 lbs. Design to entertain the viewer's eye and alleviate travel fatigue,
Pegasus has changed the airport terminal's foot traffic pattern, as people ride the escalators amd circle the flying horse to see it from every angle.
Closeup of the 3D Pegasus wire sculpture shows the complex and intricate way all the planes, angles and details are woven in. They add up to a remarkably solid and resilient structure.
Suspended beneath the airport teminal's glass dome skylight, the flying horse wire sculpture's appearance changes constantly, depending on the time of day, sunlight or clouds, and ambient indoor lighting. It is almost never the same twice.
